Russian vets celebrate Victory Day

A Memorial Day service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, May 26, at Evergreen Cemetery, Commonwealth Avenue, Brighton.

I recently received the following letter that came all the way from Houston, Texas, from Dick Russell, a 95-year-old former Allston-Brighton resident. In it, Mr. Russell touches upon some of the Allston-Brighton landmarks of his youth.

Iris flowers are like jewels, held above a stately scepter of green blades. Although there are many species, from inches high to three and four feet, they bloom for only a few short weeks. The next 48 weeks or so of the year, I wait, eager for the next showing.
